Alpe d'Huez - The ResortThis is fast becoming a resort to rival the best. The village is more convenient than charming but the surrounding scenery is outstanding and sure to keep photographers busy. The recent growth in popularity is attributed to an increase in quality chalets and a big investment in the lift system. Alpe d'Huez is a genuine all-rounder with runs to suit all abilities, good childcare, plenty of nightlife and of activities both on and off the snow. The resort of Alpe d’Huez, near Grenoble, one of the biggest ski areas in the world, offers 220km of south-facing runs with wonderful panoramic views of the Ecrins mountains, to satisfy all winter sport enthusiasts. The resort offers 85 lifts, 700 snow cannons, 110 runs, floodlit night skiing, a snow park, 54 km of cross-country skiing and 30 km of mountain walks. Altitude: 1250 to 3330m - 220 km of runs – winter and summer skiing. Alpe d’Huez is also well-known for the wide range of non-ski activities it has on offer: open-air ice rink, heated outdoor swimming pool, over 27 sporting and cultural activities in the spacious and modern Congress building (cinema, golf range, climbing wall, gym…). There is also a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants available for you to enjoy, as well as all the services you need for a worry free holiday. On The Mountain: The massive sunny bowl surrounding the village presents plenty of non-threatening runs for novices and children - everybody can ski home. Most of the key areas of the resort are linked by cable car and can be accessed by easy blue runs, as well as more interesting reds. Groups of mixed abilities can explore the area to it's full potential and still meet up for lunch! There are some above average mountain restaurants to try, one of the best being Les Arielles on the way to Oz. The really steep stuff is mainly up on the Pic Blanc glacier. Choose between the bone shaking moguls of the 'Tunnel' and the 'Sarenne' - Europe's longest black run boasting fantastic views. On the Town: 1850 as expected is full of the finer things of life and offers the most exciting and expensive nightlife, with top Paris cabaret acts competing with DJ's and cocktails for your precious euros. 1850 offers the most variation for non-ski days and outdoor activities range from tobogganing to parachute jumps. There are plenty of places to be pampered, along with good shops, a bowling alley and a cinema. The traditional village centres of 1300 and 1550 have a more low key atmosphere with the emphasis on lively pubs and traditional mountain cuisine. All the areas are linked until midnight by the free ski bus.
